LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery Enjoy an immersive build Space enthusiasts will love unlocking the mysteries of our solar system with this engaging 2,354-piece project. ‘Looking at the model, it was great to reminisce about my experiences in space launching the telescope for the first time. ‘I was thrilled to see the space shuttle in LEGO form, and was very impressed by the amount of intricate detail they have managed to recreate from the module where we used to sleep and eat through to what we called the “milk stalls” on the telescope,’ said former astronaut Dr. Take a journey of exploration with this LEGO® NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) model building kit for adults. This was without a doubt the most challenging part of this model – trying to couple the front and main landing gear without removing any space from the payload bay and without compromising the structure of the model.’ The LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) set is part of a series of buildable models for adults, offering an escape from everyday life with display pieces to admire. This challenging set for adult builders includes many advanced technical. Add functional landing gear and you have a real puzzle. Complete your own space missions with the Nasa Space Shuttle Discovery from LEGO. ‘Generally, in a LEGO model we can rely on the size to accommodate the structure that holds the whole set together, but on the Discovery Space Shuttle we needed to create a smooth exterior and an interior capable of holding the payload. In the real vehicle every inch of space is used in ingenious ways,’ said LEGO Model Designer Milan Madge. ![]() ‘The Space Shuttle is the most complex vehicle ever made, so as you can imagine, translating this into LEGO was an exciting challenge. It can be stowed in the payload bay ready for builders to recreate its deployment. The set also builds the Hubble Space Telescope, with its hinged mirror housing and new gold foil solar arrays. Inside there is a crew cabin with the five seats for the astronauts, the flight and robotic arm (Remote Manipulator System) control panels and the space shuttle’s storage lockers. Other authentic touched include the engines, with three main engines for launch and smaller engines that are used for in-orbit manoeuvres. My sticker sheets were also badly curled, which didn’t help. The model includes functional landing gear, payload bay doors and reflective stickers depict the cooling radiators. While the normal stickers were straight forward to apply, the reflective stickers were painful, as the doors are curved, with the stickers going on the interior of the curve. As per normal with these types of subjects, the first few pages of the manual outline some information about the actual Discovery. There’s also an instruction manual, sticker sheet with the stickers for the info panels and a couple more, a foil sticker sheet for the stickers inside the payload bay doors, and a plastic sheet with the reflective panels for the Hubble. Inside the box there’s 18 bags across 17 numbered steps, and a bag of the larger parts. The detail is exquisite, and it also includes a bonus Hubble Space Telescope as a separate and equally as detailed build. There’s also been numerous space shuttles in LEGO, but this one takes the scale up a notch, measuring 54cm in length. Adding in the Space Shuttle Discovery is really exciting, and especially at this scale. This LEGO set for adults features the Space Shuttle Discovery and the Hubble Space Telescope from NASA’s 1990 STS-31 mission. One of the most highly regarded sets, the Saturn V is still listed as on back order on, and then there’s also the ISS and the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander. ![]() There’s a very strong pairing, not including the iconic Classic Space loved by so many fans.
